Teaching and Scholarly Interests
Professor Wu currently is engaged in two research projects. The first project explores how historical events and experiences in contemporary China and Tibet are conceived within cultural “texts” such as literature and film, with special attention to the historical significance of the Tibetan “New Wave” cinema. Her second project examines the idea of dignity in the ancient wisdom tradition of Tibetan Buddhism and evaluates its relevance to our contemporary world.
Professor Wu teaches a wide range of Asian history courses at Agnes Scott College, including Chinese history, Japanese history, the Vietnam Wars, modern China through literature and film, and World War Two in Asia on film. Professor Wu is a rare historian who incorporates contemplative methods in both teaching and research. She designs and implements Contemplative Japan, a Global Study course that includes a two-week trip to Japan. Her recent coauthored publication in Journal of Thought, “Three-Level Understanding: Recovering Self-awareness in the Art of Critical Thinking” (2019), aims to illustrate the central role self-awareness plays in developing critical thinking skills and provide students with tools needed to relate effectively with themselves, others, and the larger, complicated, 21st-century world.
